A Simple Guide to Delegation That Sticks

Clear context, decision boundaries, and useful feedback make delegation easier for everyone.

Good delegation is not simply handing over a task. It is sharing enough context for someone else to make the right decisions, while making it clear when a decision should come back to you.

Set the finish line and the guardrails

Explain what a successful result looks like, when it is due, and which choices the person can make independently. Share examples where possible. If something needs your approval—such as spending, public communications, or a change to customer policy—name that boundary directly.

Make feedback part of the process

After the first handoff, compare the result with the expected outcome. Keep the parts that worked, update the checklist where something was unclear, and agree on the next checkpoint. That small feedback loop turns a one-off handoff into a dependable process.
